This past Saturday saw Oahu families come out in full force to be a part of one of the most fun events ever created based around the sport of bodyboarding, The Keiki Oceanfest (Waimanalo Bay Beach Park/Sheerwoods). Jeff Hubbard, The USBA and it’s staff of 20 volunteers put on a show for the kids and families that included a free contest plus free food from Wahoo’s (Sandy Beach) and Kenekee’s (Waimanalo), while Vitamin Water provided the healthy beverages for everyone. There was a fun two feet wave rolling into the beach park created by the weekends trade wind swell which all the competitors ripped up while laughing their way through the day.
The ever competitive division of the 13-15yr old age group started the day with action from riders like Pono Lyman and Nainoah Barns who where finding fun barrels to roll combos that got them into the final with Nainoah taking 1st the division. In the girls division it was five year old Kavehe Campbel who stole the show with a take off roll assisted by her uncle Koliah and a charging mentality that had her spinning on to the shore with confidence. The ever popular 9 and under Tandem divison was 100% the most fun and exciting to watch and compete in. This division features a parent or guardian who is able to assist his or her Son/Daughter to ride the wave and do maneuvers. This year was a tight race between last years winners The Reeves duo of Hauoli and Nick, who were dethroned by Blain and Quickson Andrews in an intensely fun final. Shayden Wolfe came through with the win in the 12 under division with some nice in and out barrels.
This years event was a complete success with waves, good weather, great food and an awesome turn out from the families of Oahu. We hope to see everyone back next year and be sure to bring a friend to the 2010 Keiki Ocean fest!
