The origin of the “El Rollo”

My good bud Pat Caldwell is credited with inventing the quintessential bodyboarding maneuver, the “El Rollo” back in the late ’70′s on Oahu, while Mike Stewart independently came up with the same move over on the Big Island around the same time.
Pat gave me this article he had copied from an old Surfer Magazine, dated October/November 1973 called “The Three-Dimensional 360″ that he says inspired him to invent the move. Lots of “hippie speak” in here, but it’s pretty cool how ahead of it’s time this was:

Collin Goddard defies the odds!

Local San Clemente team rider Collin Goddard was turning heads on the local competition scene here in SoCal when the unthinkable happened on November 9, 2010. He was spearfishing with buddies in South Laguna when they decided to take a break and do a popular cliff jump in Monarch Bay. Collin had done the 60-foot leap before and didn’t think much of it when he hucked himself off the cliff on a low tide day in early November. That’s where things when horribly awry.
As he hit the water, his body angle was a bit off, causing him to sort of “fold” at the waist, buckling discs and bones in his back to the point that he thought he had done some damage, but figured it was a simple pulled muscle. He tried to “swim it off” to no avail. By the time he reached the beach, he had to be helped out of the water. He figured he’d tell his buddies to keep spearfishing while he shook it off, but as he put it, “The pain was too intense”. He managed to drag himself up over 100 stairs to the road where a friend drove him home, and eventually his dad took him to the ER. Several hours and MRI’s later, he was diagnosed with some serious back injuries that left him inches from permanent paralysis, so he was immobilized immediately and stayed that was for several weeks.
Collin kept busy honing his video gaming skills and trying to keep his sanity, and now, nearly two months later is walking around just fine in his “turtle shell” brace to keep his midsection from bending and re-damaging the bones and discs. After the brace comes off, he’ll get into a month of physical therapy and then be back in action. He plans to spend most of the winter 2011/2012 in Hawaii.
